Most Nigerian MOGs are fond of wearing suit especially while on ministerial
function. It is like to step out without suit is to “belittle” your “anointing”
in the eyes of other ministers and the congregation. Even if you are a guest
minister and you get there on shirt with or without tie provided you are not on
suit you may be ushered to the back seat. And because you are so humble not to
want to start explaining to the innocent usher you will then have to scribble a
note to the organizers that you are somewhere in the congregation. Do I blame
the usher? Of course no…he just ‘addressed you the way you are dressed’-without
suit! And that is the culture he is used to and that is the slogan he has
imbibed subconsciously-“you are addressed the way you are dressed”. As a matter
of fact, in some churches, the front congregational rows are reserved for
members who would wear suit to church on a Sunday worship service.
I saw a picture of a
world renowned minister who came on invitation to Nigeria for a conference, and
everyone protocol and minister at the airport who went to welcome him were on
suit as I saw in the picture, only the visiting man was on a casual wear. Then
later on during the conference he was spotted on a shirt and tie, no suit. And
as he departed the airport, he was back on casual. I used to think suit is best
suited for cold weather and this man who had come from the cold region should
do more of the suit thing on his arrival, stay and departure, but he was
perfectly simple.
Checkout ministers
conferences, to be without suit is to be likened to that man without a wedding
garment, and you may just be shown the way out. On ministers calendars of
PFN/CAN, 99.9% will be on suit. It seems like suit is the divine dress code for
ministration for majority. And honestly if I must whisper, I would say myself
have been caught in this ministration “suit-web” not on one occasion.
But, is the suit a
dress code, official uniform of MOGs, or wearing suit commands more anointing?
Or is it a culture we have built overtime? Perhaps it makes MOGs look smarter
upstage or a phenomenon mentors have passed down to protégés overtime. Jesus,
Peter and others in their days didn’t wear suit yet their grace were
surpassing. So, I am convinced that suit doesn’t generate or add to a man’s
existing grace and/or anointing. It is perhaps a mind thing or rather an
attitude built overtime. But truth, it makes for smartness. It is altogether a
good thing to look good in season (ministration) and “out of season” (no
ministration).
But, come to think of
it, am I against wearing suits by MOGs and for ministration? God forbid! I am
just thinking loud, and perhaps convey a message that Heaven is looking out for
fruits and not for suits, and so we should be careful not to replace salvation
with flamboyance. The latter is good, but the former is the best!
I am still thinking…
